Nike Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 Rafa Sp/Gn Men's Shoes
2.6
Durable and stable for aggressive movers; outsole guarantee included!
If you're looking for shoes that meet the demands of your footwork and will turn heads on the court, the Vapor Cage 4 is for you. Engineered and designed for one of the best movers on tour (vamos Rafa!), these shoes will meet the standards of players who crave serious support, enhanced stability, ridiculous levels of responsiveness and maximum durability. A Zoom Air unit in the forefoot offers players more energy as they spring into their next shot. Hard court sliders will appreciate how the outsole has been integrated into the upper where aggressive movers need it most for enhanced durability. Foot frame technology increases stability and reaction time, and in case you needed another reason to get these shoes on your feet, they come with a 6-month outsole durability guarantee. Players of all levels who need support and can be hard on their shoes will want to look here before gravitating toward lighter, less durable options.
- Upper: Unique lacing system wraps around your feet for support and is hidden for durability. Breathable, supportive upper hugs feet for step-in comfort.
- Midsole: Zoom Air unit in the forefoot for more energy and a responsive, springy feel. Lateral foot frame helps with stability and responsiveness.
- Outsole: Generative design blends rubber and Kurim for extra durability where needed. Beefed up durability for players who slide. Backed by a 6-month outsole durability guarantee.
- Color: Bright Spruce / Atomic Green / White / Black

Poor qualityI really like this shoes, but the upper layer of fabric was torn after only 1.5 months (only the first layer, on the right side for right shoe and left for the left one). I’ve been playing once-twice a week for this period.
I would like to recommend the shoes, but the durability for me is too bad. I have pretty wide foot, maybe it could impact.
Now I am still using them, but the appearance is ugly.
Narrow and tippyOne of the TW reviewers called these wide, but I have to disagree. They're about a C width. Also, the sole is quite rounded, which is probably nice for some players, but if you're prone to rolling your ankle like I am, they feel a bit unsteady. The lacing system and the way it interacts with the bootie inside is weird and unnecessary, but it probably looked great on a PowerPoint back at Nike headquarters.
Just ehThese shoes are pretty nice, but the arch was killing me. The inside of the arch was painfully pressing against the inside of the arch, making it hard to play with for extended periods of time. Not to mention they are also very heavy and clunky.
lots of cons, few prosThe Good: Attractive and well cushioned.
The Bad: Clunky feeling, definitely NOT for match play, poor quality, the sides ripped out on both pairs I bought and I'm gentle on shoes weighing only 148 lbs. The lacing system doesn't work. Just because it looks innovative doesn't mean it is.
Sadly disappointedWhile I originally loved the shoes when I got them as a present. The price tag was very high but I thought with the 6 month warranty I thought it would be worth the money.
They are heavy but I got used to that, I'm not a fan of the lacing system but that's minor. The upper sides have torn away on both sides , I don't wear think socks so I guess it's from the strain of movement on the courts.
I am disappointed because I really wanted to like these.
I would not recommend these to any aggressive mover or anyone who plays a lot of tennis.

Comments: Been wearing this generation of shoes and if you recall, they've been developing this line for Rafa since the Breathe Cage over a decade and a half ago. The Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 being the newest of the lot, improved with fusion of other shoes and data learnings of its own. However, these were the worst Nike tennis shoes I have ever worn, being loyal to Nike and this line of shoes. They fit too generously and the lacing system makes it worse and does not give you a stable fit. Most importantly, while they have an outsole warranty, the upper tore within a month! I do not recommend buying these.

Comments: Love this shoe for comfort and it perfectly fits my feet. So far, I am using Nikes for indoor and adidas for outdoor. As adidas wears away, I'll stick to Nike's, but comfort and perfect size come with a price.

Comments: I found these shoes when my coach, recent graduate from University of Illinois, recommended them. He is really fast and churns through shoes constantly because he spends six to eight hours a day on the court. I am a 4.5 to 5.0 level player that has tried every shoe such as the Barricades, Novaks, Vapors, Zoom GP Turbos, etcetera, and these are great for me. I am a big guy, at 6'2" 210 pounds, and they really feel good with excellent cushioning. I think some people may be struggling because of the fit. They run really big, so make sure you get a size smaller than you typically buy in Nike. I wear a size 12 in Vapors or Zoom GP Turbos, so I had to return the 12 and get an 11. They fit like a glove and I love them so far.

Comments: 5.0 level former NCAA player, slides on hard court. These shoes are the worst version of the Cages yet. The Cage 3s were great shoes, much lighter, more breathable, durable for sliding on hard courts, and very secure fit. These Vapor Cage 4s are very heavy and feel clunky on the feet, fell apart on the sides from sliding and are not breathable at all. The only thing the Vapor Cage 4 does well is it has good durability in the sole, but not the rest of the shoes. No wonder Rafa stopped wearing these shoes after Rome last year and went back to a modified version of the Cage 3s!

Comments: Well I read all the comments after buying these and I'm glad I did. I've owned almost every pair of aggressive shoes Nike has made. Court Ballistec 1 through 4, Cage 1 and 2, and some less aggressive models like the Vapor. To this day the Ballistic 4 shoes were the best for me. These shoes I feel is a good marriage of the Cage line and the Vapor line. I'm not sure what everyone is talking about stability with these, they do have rounded edges, but if your footwork is good that shouldn't bother you. Very durable which makes them heavy. Lacing system that really doesn't make since, but is manageable. Good traction. Overall if you liked the Ballistic line these are the closest that Nike have produced in years. If you like lighter shoes with a more stable feel, try something else.

Comments: Terrible. My heel completely slips and the toe is too long and narrow. A total waste of money.

Comments: These shoes are garbage. They feel unstable, don't breathe, are unstable, don't move well laterally, forward, or backwards. I've half rolled my ankles four times in six outings which has never happened with any other shoes. I read an article that even Rafa stayed with a Cage 3 modified to look like the Cage 4 instead of go to the Cage 4; I now know why. These are the worst premium tennis shoes I've ever worn; feels almost like playing tennis in running shoes due to the clumsiness and instability. To be fair, they're quite comfortable for light hitting sessions, but once real world rigors of match play begins, cutting, starting, stopping, quick movement is difficult and I feel clumsy on the court. The adidas Ubersonic 2s, 3s, and 4s are much more stable. However the Ubersonic 4 shoes made the toe box way too big, which is the same as was done with the Cage 4 shoes to a lesser degree, but both basically make you go down a half size and the Ubersonic 4 forefoot is too thin to be comfortable in long matches. It's almost as if adidas and Nike conspired to make bad 4 iterations of once very respectable Cage and Ubersonic lines.

Comments: These are very good shoes, a more thick and heavy version of the Cage 3s they replaced. They added the term Vapor in here as to merge the two lines, the Cages and the Vapors, the Nadal and Federer shoes respectively. These are nothing like Vapors, they are more like Cages meet adidas Barricade; heavier, more sturdy, more durable. I preferred the Cage 3, but these shoes are good too and I've had I think four pairs. One downside for me is that my right foot slips out of the back of the right shoe. Could just be me. That aside, these are solid shoes that are heavy as far as Nike is concerned, but makes up for it with stability and durability. Comfort is very good. I still prefer its predecessor, the Nike Cage 3 as that fit like a glove, was true to Nike and the Cage and its preceding Breathe Free line in essence, looked sleek, felt fantastic, and was very durable. The only downside of the Cage 3 is that my fingers got rashes because to put on those tongueless shoes I had to insert my finger into them to fit the shoes on. My other friend had that same problem and I think he prefers these shoes. Solid shoes, with a tongue upgrade on the Cage 3, and upgrades on durability, stability, etcetera. Highly recommended. Six month warranty on top makes them a fantastic buy.

Comments: I wish these were just a touch lighter and maybe slightly lower to the ground, and definitely a little more breathability wouldn't hurt. All things that would help weight anyway. The lace system is definitely innovative, but it is somewhat lacking in the ability to really hold it's place. The laces want to open up a bit in the upper midfoot area.I notice the weight. The softer cushioned feel is nice in the sense you might think it's easier on the body this way, but is this really a great tennis shoe? I struggle to really know.

Comments: Half a size down worked great for me. I haven't enjoyed a pair of Nike tennis shoes as much since the Court Ballistec line or Breathe Cage series. It definitely took a few sessions to adjust to the fit, but once these are broken in they feel great. Support where I need it, good court feel, and the cushioning works. I have a medium to average foot and they hold my feet pretty well, not the best lock down in the heel, but I'm not sliding out of them either. The upper toe material isn't the most durable as I tend to drag my feet, but the outsole is built like a tank. I can see the outsole rubber lasting a very long time. My past previous favorites have included the Breathe Cage II, Ballistec 4.3, adidas Barricade V, and New Balance 1296, but this might be the one I stick with since the other models have been discontinued more or less. I value support and I feel like these shoes offer that and more. A little on the heavier side, but don't let that discourage you from trying these shoes out!

Comments: Nike is going downhill. These new shoes are not up to the Nike standard of the past in my opinion.

Comments: Love the colors, but the weight is too much for long clay court matches in the Florida heat, purchased the clay versions from TWE, switched back to the Cage 3 clay, much faster feeling shoes. Not sure why Nike can't make true lightweight clay shoes, don't need all that rubber on the upper for clay shoes. Just a lazy way of saving money. Going to try the Asics Speed FF 2 clay when they launch in Europe. Hopefully TWE will carry them. Great service by the way from the team in Europe.

Comments: I am equivalent to a 5.0 player and am about to play in NCAA and I would say these have been some of my favorite shoes yet. I am a fast mover that likes to move around and slide around the court. My go-to shoes have always been Gel Resolutions, adidas Barricades, or SoleCourt Boosts, the recent ones are not as good. Unlike the current adidas SoleCourt Boosts, these shoes do not feel as heavy, and are just as durable and comfortable as well. There is a bit of toe-jam due to me going down a half size, but other than that these shoes are great. The curved outsoles are definitely something to get used to but after that, it's nearly perfect. The shoes also have great traction and have good give as well to control my sliding, which is something that was harder to control when I had Asics or my old favorite Nike Zoom Vapor 9.5 shoes. The durability guarantee is a great thing as well so I'm glad I moved back to Nike.

Comments: I'm 4.0 level tennis player and I play three to four times a week. I have used Nike shoes for the last five years and specifically Zoom Cage models because they are wider shoes. I loved the Zoom Cage 3 and was anxious to try the highly recommended Vapor Cage 4 model. I can honestly say I'm very disappointed. First, their new fancy shoe lace design is an extremely poor design. The top of the lace does not go through the shoes like in almost every tennis shoe on the market. It now goes through a skimpy loop sewn into the side of the shoes. I have used this style loop in other shoes and it does not last. It breaks long before the sole of the shoes wear out and it is not covered under warranty. This loop also makes it impossible to tie your shoes tight. This is a major design flaw for me. I like my tennis shoes fitting snug. The new sole design of the Cage 4's is very unstable. This soles are so completely different from the Cage 3 that I could never find my footing as naturally as I did with the Cage 3's. Finally after the ninth time trying to get used to this new shoes, I sprained my ankle. Hence I will never wear a Zoom Cage 4 again. I cannot recommend the Zoom Cage 4 and I'm disappointed that Nike stopped producing their long proven Cage 3 design.

Comments: Terrible iteration. If you play competitively, you will feel like someone tied cinderblocks to your feet during play. Maybe if you're just messing around or teaching this is not a concern, but for serious hitters I recommend the previous version. Much better shoe.

Comments: I was excited to buy these shoes. However right away, my ankles would hurt after playing with them every time. Unfortunately I could not return them. So I have a pair of brand new shoes that I can't use.
From: JF, 9/16/20
Comments: Honestly don't recommend. I think good footwork is very compromised. It's a good design externally, very clever and durable. But the shoe feels unstable. Like I'm sitting on a ball or something. I can sense a slight feeling of it wanting to slide or roll under my foot. It's high off the ground which just increases the instability. Not a good shoe. Looks interesting and cool, but I think it's a poor design and any tennis player with great footwork will be at a handicap.

Comments: Heavy shoes and I love them. I intend to buy many pairs. light shoes are killing my feet and knees as you pay for their lightness one way or another. Thanks Nike.
From: Fernando, 9/2/20
Comments: These are the worst looking shoes I've ever had. Certainly feels like clowns shoes. Trying them for the first time, I felt I was wearing short skis. I was having a difficult time moving side to side. Size does not fit normal like the Cage 3's. The lace pattern does not feel fitted for support. Not sure what to do, if I can even return them or sell them. I wished the Cage 4's were similar to the 3's. I never write a comment, but this time after reading everyone's comments, I feel the struggles. I'm an Open level player. Speed and aggressiveness is everything to me.

Comments: True to size for me. Extremely comfortable for me as I do wear insoles. Durability has been very good. Yes they are heavier, so what. Perfect for being on the courts all day. For matches, just wear something lighter. I am very pleased so far.

Comments: I wanted to love this shoe. I loved how it looked, how it felt, looked durable, had great support, and was comfortable. The length however was comical. I usually wear a size 9 almost everything, Nike's included. I was advised to go down half a size, so I did. They were length-wise at least a half size too large. I tried a size 8 at a local store and there was still length! Width wise my foot couldn't handle it at size 8. Unfortunately the sizing didn't work out for me, but if you have a narrow foot and can size down these may work for you.

Comments: Severely disappointed. I went from The Vapor 9.5s, most excellent shoe to the Vapor X, but the outsole pronation destroyed my medial sesamoid bones, got some really bad inflammation. Went through some extensive exploring with custom orthopedics, podiatrist, nothing helped, purely the outsole causing issue. I switched to the Cage 3, since even with the X's I was going through an outsole once a month. The Cage 3 was brilliant, finally found a solution both with pain and outsole wear. Of course, Nike had to make an improvement and came out with Cage 4. Tried it, and while the rear outsole is flat, they again pronate the forefoot outsole. This is impossible to see through pictures, and I bet a lot of people don't have the same sesamoiditis I experience with pronation in shoes, but these were the same as the X's. I tried everything to make these work, as they look great and overall feel great, very heavy though, but nothing worked. Had my orthopedics built up on medial side to try and combat the pronation, but it simply wasn't enough. Really wanted to stick with Nike, but I am forced to make a brand switch. Wilson's Rush Pro 3.0's are great, but lasted about a month on the outsole. Hoping Asics will be able to compete with Nike quality. Overall, great shoe, most people probably won't experience the same pain I do, but disappointed that twice with Nike's improvements in a shoe, they have not worked in my opinion. Why change the 9.5 outsole?

Comments: After reading all the negative reviews on how this shoe is to heavy, the sizing issues and how people can't get their feet in, the insoles tearing etc. I didn't have any of those problems. Although normally I wear a size 10 shoe, I was able to fit the 9.5 comfortably. These shoes definitely provide the cushion and support as described and doesn't leave your feet aching or in pain after being on court for more than two hours. Great shoe overall.
