What to Wear to Play Pickleball

Are there rules to what you wear when you're playing pickleball? We discuss that and offer our picks for whatever the pickleball occasion, whether it's serious tournament play or happy hour and everywhere in between.

Fastest Growing Sport

Pickleball was invented back in 1965 by combining elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Fast forward to today and this fun and exciting game is now the fastest growing sport in the US for a third year in a row. According to the Association of Pickleball Professionals, as of 2024, there were 36.5 million pickleball players in the country and that number keeps increasing every day.

With the array of new players joining the ranks, there are many different levels of competitiveness and fun out on the courts. Some people are more ambitious in raising their skill level and DUPR ratings, and others love pickleball more for the social aspect. With all this growth, it’s no wonder that so many companies are jumping into the game and creating pickleball specific collections. Whatever motivates your passion for this sport, Pickleball Warehouse has a great selection of apparel and accessories for every pickleball enthusiast.

Official Tournament Rules for Pickleball Attire

What you wear to play pickleball could vary whether you're playing for fun or playing a USA Pickleball sanctioned tournament.

Local courts may post attire rules and likely will require non-marking court shoes, but recreational play is typically more relaxed in terms of apparel restrictions. For tournaments, however, USAP does set forth specific rules. If playing tournaments, clothing that is close to the color of the ball may not be allowed. It's up to the tournament director, but players could be asked to change if wearing neon yellow. Other USAP rules require graphics to be in good taste, and shoes must be non-marking.
