Babolat adds a sleek grey cosmetic to the Pure Strike 98

Introducing the Pure Strike 98 16x19 Carbon Grey! Like the standard cosmetic version, this racquet is designed for intermediate and advanced players who crave controllable power and great feel. Featuring more spin potential than its 18x20 counterpart, this racquet's more open pattern makes it easier to execute the full range of angles and trajectories. Other specs include a 330 swingweight, which not only keeps the racquet stable against higher levels of pace but also translates into impressive power on full cuts. For this update, Babolat adds FSI Control technology, which features tighter string spacing for an even more precise and predictable trajectory. To help with comfort, Babolat updates this racquet with NF2-Tech (flax fibers) in the shaft while keeping the head free of dampening agents to provide more direct ball feedback. As with previous generations, this frame benefits from Control Frame Technology, which blends square and elliptical cross sections to enhance stability and ball feedback. Ultimately, the Pure Strike 98 16x19 Carbon Grey is ideal for experienced players looking for a stable racquet with controllable power and great feel.

Poor String JobI purchased 2 new racquets from TW and asked to have them both strung at 57 lbs there before shipping. When I received the racquets, in both of them, the crosses were sagging throughout the string bed. When I straightened the strings and then tested the tension both rackets measured in the low 40's. Needless to say, I had both racquets restrung before hitting a ball with them. The racquets are fabulous now that they have the correct tension in them.

A Goldilocks racquet for meI first learned to play tennis in the 1990s, so my playing style was shaped by the racquets from that era. Then I took nearly a 20-year break before picking it up again around 2010. This time, I got much more serious—joining a local NTRP 3.5 league and experimenting with different racquets, from the Wilson Pro Staff (a nod to my ’90s days) to the Head Radical, Babolat Pure Drive, and AeroPro. Eventually, I settled on the Head Radical (16x19) for its balance of feel and control. Lately, I’ve been looking for a bit more power while still keeping a control-oriented setup. After testing the Head Speed and the Babolat Pure Strike (16x19), the latter really hit my Goldilocks zone: the signature Babolat pop combined with precise control. I’ve come to like it so much that my Head Radical now mostly stays in the bag.

16x19 Strike vs Drive and vs Strike 18x20I bought this Strike gen4 16x19 for my son who broke his Pure Drive and tried my Pure Strike. He is very happy with it and says he has more control than the Drive without losing much power. I borrowed his 16x19 racquet to compare with my 18x20. tbh I didn't know what I was doing when I bought my 18x20 5 years ago. I was going back to tennis after a 15-year hiatus and had not bought a racquet since my 90s Prince. So I just followed some advice to go for more control - I was more concerned by consistency than with power or spin. So, how do the two racquets compare? Playing with the 16x19 I felt a clear decrease in control, but I didn't see much gain in power or spin. I think that my game is just used to how forgiving a 18x20 is, so when I played with the 16x19 I realized how a lot of my balls hit not the center of the frame. I suppose that if I played more often with a 16x19 I would have no choice but to become more precise in my hits, but I'm glad my 18x20 is so forgiving. As for the power and spin, I didn't see a massive difference, but maybe it's because I have set both racquets with a multi-filament to preserve my elbow. For sure a poly gives more pop, and maybe it is more dramatic with a 16x19. So, my recommendation is: if you are a young player and intend to improve your technique, go for the 16x19. But if you think you have reached your peak technique and just want better control, go for the 18x20.

For an Intermediate to Advanced playerThis is a control frame with the dampening, stability and plow through to fight back! With a 330g swing weight, it's not nearly as maneuverable as most control frames from other brand names. But, it's also have the power and plow through other control frames are missing. This v.4 update improves on the past versions with so much better stability. This allows me to simply stand my ground and push back when you'd be on the defensive with any other control frame. It does have a bit more weight to though which means you'd also need to be able to manage that to use this frame enjoyably. The PS 98 v4 strikes a balance on spin and power like no other. An inherent Babolat Trait.

A great racquetI have always had Prince. I decided to try this racquet. I am fully converted to Babolat. Great control from the baseline and paired with the rpm 17s. It gives it a good amount of spin as well. Overall I am having a good time

Getting backI’m getting back into tennis after 30 years. I needed a solid racquet that provided consistency and control. This racquet provides both without sacrificing power.
