Best Wilson Racquet For Me

14 min read

Wilson manufactures some of the finest racquets in the tennis industry, and for decades they have helped define classic feel and performance with their player-driven franchises. If you are wondering what Wilson racquet may be best for you and your game, this article breaks down the main Wilson racquet families for your convenience.

Defyer

The Defyer is the newest family from Wilson and one of the most anticipated racquet releases of the last decade. Fostering impressive tour presence and growth since last summer, Wilson have slowly converted many of their diehard fans into this new silo offering more spin without seemingly any tradeoffs. The Defyer's most notable option comes in the Defyer 98 Pro, which is the model many tour professionals like Karen Khachanov, Sebastian Korda, and Moises Kouame have fully switched to ahead of its official release. The Defyer 98 Pro utilizes a 98 square-inch head size that is nicely complemented by a 16x20 string pattern, which gives this powerful and very spin-friendly aerodynamic frame enough control to compete with the best of the best. Rounding out the family is a Defyer 100, utilizing the tried-and-true 100 square-inch, 16x19, 300-gram racquet recipe, and is already endorsed by the likes of Peyton Stearns and Anastasia Potapova. There are also lighter weight options in the 100L and 100UL. Check out our video review on the Defyer 98 Pro below!

Defyer 98 Pro

"Considering how light this racquet felt in my hand, I was surprised that it maintained some decent stability at net."

-Troy, TW Playtester

The Defyer 98 Pro is one of the hottest racquets to hit the tennis scene in years, with much of the buzz concerning the eventual Defyer being centered around this 98 square-inch, 305-gram, 16x20 racquet in a blacked-out prototype form for well over a year before it finally became market-available. Described by our team as sitting somewhere in between a Pure Aero and a VCORE, the Defyer 98 Pro offers plentiful spin with enough versatility to comfortably drive balls flat as well. Our testers noted an unusually high level of maneuverability in stock form, positioning this frame as an excellent platform option for higher level players who need some extra mass. Other upsides proved to be the combination of spin and power, as well as the racquet's inherent feel and touch for shaping volleys.

Defyer 100

"I was able to absorb the pace and redirect it into the corners when I played against bigger hitters, with one of my opponents saying they were impressed with how much pace I was sending back."

-Brittany, TW Playtester

The Defyer 100 surprised our team with how playable it ended up being, with a couple of our team members actually preferring it to the Defyer 98 Pro in stock form. The racquet's spec profile (100 square-inch, 16x19 string pattern, 300-gram weight) isn't anything unusual, but the spin-focused geometry Wilson is emphasizing makes this racquet a fast-swinging experience from all areas of the court. Its well-rounded identity proved to be one of the best aspects of its performance, with our testers praising its versatility and adaptable nature. For those looking for a possible alternative to a Pure Aero, Extreme MP, or a VCORE 100, the Defyer 100 answers that specific call.

Blade

The Blade series from Wilson is one of the most iconic modern franchises for good reason. Boasting excellent feel, stability, and great spin, there's a good reason why these frames are seen all over on courts at the recreational, collegiate, and professional levels. The Blades offer something for everyone, and have a unique lineup tailored to offer impressive control and feel without sacrificing in other areas. The two main flagships are the 98 16x19 and 18x20, which are some of the best all-around frames out there. Fans of more power access though will appreciate options like the Blade 100 or the slightly extended Blade 100 Pro, both of which retain their feel while increasing power access. There are also more unusual offerings like the Blade 98S with its 18x16 string pattern and the Blade 104, which is both oversize and extended in length.

Blade 98 16x19

"I felt like the Blade 98 16x19 v10 did a good job of absorbing pace without feeling too flimsy, and I felt comfortable going after smaller targets."

-Oak, TW Playtester

In many ways, the Blade 98 16x19 is a true "jack-of-all-trades" among modern frames, accessible enough for players still refining their technique, yet precise and reliable enough to work at higher levels of the game. Its 16x19 string pattern provides enough spin and power, and its 305-gram weight is both stable in stock form and suitable for platforming up to a more desired spec. The tenth version of the Blade 98 16x19 sees the frame get a new beam geometry and mold, now slightly thicker in key areas for increased power production. The Blade isn't hurting for spin either, making it a truly well-rounded experience across the board.

Blade 98 18x20

"I felt very much in control of my shots with this racquet. I found the power level to be more helpful, with easier access to pace and depth compared to previous 18x20 Blades."

-Chris, TW Playtester

Though denser string beds with an 18-main drill pattern are increasingly less common, the Blade 98 18x20 straddles the line between modern weapon and traditional feel. Like its 16x19 sibling, the tenth version of the Blade 98 18x20 incorporates a now-thicker beam for increased pace generation. Our team found this particular version of the Blade to be one of its strongest yet, with it garnering rave reviews and even becoming a go-to option for one of our product testers. Comfort proved exceptional, as did the frame's feel and spin (even for an 18x20 pattern). For fans of denser patterns, the Blade 98 18x20 is one of the best modern options available.

Blade Pro 100

"I felt like I could dictate points and change directions from the baseline with ease, and it had enough put-away power to end points."

-Michelle, TW Playtester

The Blade Pro 100 is one of the most commonly used frames on the WTA tour, with many of the players in a Blade paintjob actually using this frame under the hood. Based off an older Steam mold, the Blade Pro 100 uses a slightly extended length of 27.25 inches to give its wielders more power and reach, which is offset by a slightly lower 295-gram static weight. This helps the racquet on average measure out to sub-320 for its swingweight, making it more manageable despite the extra length. The racquet pairs a 100 square-inch head size with a 16x20 string pattern, making it powerful, spin-friendly, and with just a tad more control compared to a 16x19 option.

Blade 100

"I found a nice blend of power and control from the baseline. I could tap into power when I needed to be aggressive, but I was still able to be precise."

-Brittany, TW Playtester

The Blade 100 is in many ways the true "sleeper" hit within the Blade silo. This 300-gram, 100 square-inch, 16x19 all-court beast garnered rave reviews not only for its versatility, but also for its ability to dial up the power and spin access. While many of our testers aren't necessarily enamored with the Blade's 98 options, a good portion of our team thoroughly enjoyed the 100 variant, praising it across the board. For fans of control-oriented 100 square-inch offerings, the Blade 100 is a great choice.

RF 01 Collection

Though he spent all of his career playing with some kind of Pro Staff, Roger Federer has been developing the RF Racquet Collection since the twilight of his playing days on tour. The RF line of racquets fall somewhere in between a Pro Staff and a more powerful modern racquet, making it a great frame for those who like to seamlessly switch between both attacking and defending. The RF 01 Pro is the most advanced option within the line at 320 grams unstrung, and would be the model actually endorsed and used by Federer post-retirement. The RF 01 and RF 01 Future are more accessible by comparison and are also great options for customizing.

RF 01 Pro

"This RF 01 Pro still offers plenty of that Wilson feel with a crisp and clean response, and I think Wilson fans will find enough Pro Staff DNA in the feel of this racquet to find the familiarity they seek."

-Chris, TW Playtester

The RF 01 Pro was specifically made for Roger Federer to use in the twilight of his career, and while it never made it on tour, the racquet has been his go-to in every exhibition since. Key changes to the more classic formula include increasing the head size from 97 to 98 square inches for more power and forgiveness, and a more aerodynamic beam shape for increasing spin and rotational capability through the air. Our team loved this new frame, with one of our testers making the switch to it for his racquet of choice.

RF 01

"I was hitting a lot of topspin on my forehands due to the easy maneuverability and the open string pattern."

-Jason, TW Playtester

The RF 01 exists in a crowded class of racquets with its 16x19 string pattern and 300-gram weight. Many frames at this spec though are more often seen with a 100 square-inch hoop instead of a 98. The slightly smaller head size gives users a tad more precision for bringing the ball back down inside the lines. Our team praised the maneuverability and easy spin production of this frame, noting its versatility from all areas of the court. This racquet is definitely worth demoing or considering against something like a Head Radical MP, a Tecnifibre TFight 300s, or a Volkl Vostra V10 300g.

RF 01 Future

"I loved how easy the racquet was to maneuver, and the launch angle was a little higher, allowing me to hit deep with ease."

-Brittany, TW Playtester

As the game shifts toward lighter and easier-swinging racquets, frames under 300 grams become more and more viable. With this trend in mind, the RF 01 Future proved suprisingly playable for being only 280 grams. Our testers praised the racquet's easy playability and noted its surprising stability in stock form. We even customized this one up to a more standard spec to see how it handled being a platform for additional mass and weight through the ball, and it was indeed quite good for fine-tuning to a desired profile. This is also a fantastic option for junior players.

Ultra

The Ultra family is pretty much all about power access. These stiff and powerful beams are for players who like to hit big with a racquet that emphasizes their pace production. While most of the options within this family are at 100 square-inches for their hoops, there is a 99 square-inch 16x18 racquet in the Ultra 99 Pro v5, which is used by several players on both the WTA and ATP. These frames feature good spin access without compromising in other areas of performance. These racquets are also available in a plethora of ligher weights for newer and developing players alike.

Ultra 99 Pro

"I found that the maneuverability of the racquet was very helpful with keeping my strokes compact and my shots in play. I could still add decent racquet head speed to my strokes and keep the RPMs going."

-Munish, TW Playtester

The Ultra 99 Pro v5 is a racquet fans have long sought after, namely due to its combination of power and spin. The 16x18 string pattern is rare enough, but when paired with a 99 square-inch head size you get something truly special. The beam osciallates from thinner to thick and then thin again, which helps keep this racquet maneuverable yet still powerful enough where it needs it. Our team praised the inherent power/spin this racquet is working with, but also noted a relatively reliable trajectory and feel, largely owing to the full graphite construction. If you're a player who prefers something stiffer and without any of the modern dampening technologies, this Ultra 99 Pro v5 is a great option.

Ultra 100

"I actually enjoyed how easily I could control the pace I was generating, and I saw some good consistency numbers, which my game relies on. With my flatter hitting style, I didn't find the need to overemphasize spin to get this racquet to work with my game."

-Tiffani, TW Playtester

The Ultra 100 v5 is definitely a power-first experience, which comes as no surprise with its 300-gram weight, 16x19 string pattern, and 100 square-inch hoop. Our team loved powering through their groundstrokes, finding ample depth pace to hit through the court with ease. While this racquet seemed to be a little more conducive for flatter swing paths, our more spin-heavy players still found enough RPM's to whip up topspin drives. Big serves were also the norm with this frame, and our team loved the easy depth they could reliably get on serve. If power is what you're after, the Ultra 100 has got you covered.

Clash

The Clash line is one of the most flexible and comfortable lines out there in the current market. These racquets are designed to be user-friendly above all else, and for those that struggle with persistent arm and shoulder injuries, the various Clash racquets are great for sustaining your hitting arm in the long run. The regular Clash is a fantastic all-around option, and the Clash Pro offers some more control and mass for more advanced players. If comfort is your biggest priority, then the Clash is your best bet from Wilson.

Clash 100 Pro

"For me, the Clash 100 Pro v3 just made tennis fun and easy without bringing my level down!"

-Michelle, TW Playtester

The Clash 100 Pro is yet another 305-gram, 16x20 contemporary frame aimed at making the modern game less demanding. This powerful and plush racquet proved great at absorbing pace and redirecting it back out with some extra venom. The 16x20 string pattern went a long way for adding some needed control into this powerful family, and our team appreciated the way the Clash 100 Pro let them swing out without any fear of arm aggravation. For advanced players who struggle with persistent injuries, the Clash 100 Pro is worth taking a chance on.

Clash 100

"If I ever need a reminder that tennis is fun, I should pick up a Wilson Clash! Not to sound cheesy, but this Clash 100 v3 is simply a blast to play with."

-Tiffani, TW Playtester

The Clash 100 is one of those frames that is above all else just simply fun to play with, letting our team swing out freely. Thankfully, they were also finding enough spin to bring balls back down into the court as well. The Clash's primary trait is abundant comfort, which makes pretty much every other aspect of the game more feasible. Power is also plentiful, which makes this racquet just a rewarding experience on the whole.

Pro Staff

The Pro Staff line is about as classic as it gets. Used over the years by legends like Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, the Pro Staff series is the pinnacle of traditional feel and control for many. These racquets oftentimes feature a smaller head size for added precision and a knife-like ability to cut through the air with devastating impact. Pro Staffs also often are known for their heavier weights and denser string patterns, which help with plow through and control. The Pro Staff Six.One 95 18x20 is one of the few racquets we carry with a stock weight above 320 grams. For those who love classic control, the Pro Staff is calling your name.

Pro Staff 97

"I felt more connected to my shots. I was able to play better offense and defense from the baseline with this update."

-Mark, TW Playtester

In many ways, classic control with modern technological support is epitomized in the Wilson Pro Staff 97. Slightly heavier weight, slightly smaller head size, slightly denser spacing. The Pro Staff is aimed at those who favor control and precision over outright power access or spin production. Its 315-gram unstrung weight is blended with a 97 square-inch head size for more precision, and its 16x19 string pattern is fairly dense in the center too for reliable spot-targeting. Our team praised the traditional feel and control of this frame, noting it as highly dependable regardless of situation.

Pro Labs

For higher level players craving a layup of full graphite and racquets without dampening technologies, the various Pro Labs offerings from Wilson cater directly to that need. Whether its the Blade Pros and their customizing-ready platform nature, or the tried-and-true traditional-feeling Six.One 95 18x20, Wilson's selection of high-level racquets for advanced players is a welcome sight for those looking for raw connection to the ball.
